Jason Saenz-Hernandez, Senior
Quander Road High School
2023-2024

“Jason has a wonderful calm in both his voice and manor,” according to Dr. George Deneault, one of his high school teachers.  “He is level-headed, and he is particularly effective in working with his classmates because he is a well-liked peer who is respected and trusted by the other students.”

Jason was selected for the Quander Road Student Council because of his skills in preventing small disagreements from escalating into physical altercations.  He says he works to comfort unhappy or argumentative students and encourages them to cool down in one of the designated “reorientation rooms”.   Jason also seeks to provide a friendly presence when he volunteers to serve as a cashier in the student-run Cafe, a space where students can eat and relax.

Jason assists as a tutor in both algebra and geometry.  Although he was born in the US, Jason speaks Spanish at home, and so he is bilingual in English and Spanish.  Jason’s language skills enable him to explain mathematics in both English and Spanish.  He can also assist Spanish-speaking students who are struggling in their English courses.

George Deneault points out that Jason’s academic interests and skills enable him to be an outstanding mentor.  His work-ethic demonstrates to other students that working hard and avoiding negative behaviors can enable them to have a happier life at school and to become good students.
