The Westfield Student Ambassador Program provides avenues for peace and friendship among a diverse population who might otherwise find it difficult to connect and feel included. Their efforts have been effective helping new students, often immigrants, integrate into the school community. Student ambassadors are role models and school leaders who encourage a safe space for all voices to be heard, treat others with openness and respect, and facilitate connections between different groups to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment. Among other activities, ambassadors meet and escort new students to their classes, give them tours of the building and include them in the Westfield community.
Many of the ambassadors were new immigrants not long ago, which provides them with an authenticity in helping with cultural transitions. Student ambassador Evelyn Hunn said, “The Student Ambassador Program includes a variety of students who were once in need of an ambassador themselves. In fact, one of our most esteemed ambassadors was once a new student herself, with limited English proficiency.”
“Her ambassador showed her around the school, introduced her to teachers and let her know about the various clubs Westfield offers. This relationship allowed her to transition into the school community with ease as she excelled academically. Today, she is an ambassador herself, a welcoming character paying it forward to other students,” said Evelyn.
In addition to providing tours to new students, ambassadors participate in school-wide events for new students including Freshman Boot Camp, New Student Touch Base, Curriculum Night and Bulldog BBQ.
The Student Services Department restarted the program during the 2021-2022 school year because a student climate survey showed a sense of not belonging for many students. The Student Ambassador Program now includes 39 students who are Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Potential ambassadors are recommended by their teachers and can also self-nominate. The application process includes administrative review of grades, attendance and discipline. And to stay active in the program, students must uphold exemplary behavior.
