2021-2022

Passionate about spreading awareness for healthy relationships, Vy Nguyen is determined to help others avoid or, if necessary, surmount relationship abuse.

As a former Miss Northern Virginia Teen USA, Vy collaborated with the One Love Foundation, www.joinonelove.org, an organization that empowers young people from all backgrounds with the knowledge to identify and avoid abusive relationships. Its goal is to disseminate resources for both mental and physical abuse. Although mental abuse may receive less attention, Vy says that “emotional trauma can leave scars just like physical trauma.”

As a One Love volunteer, Vy has served as a Teen Ambassador, Workshop Facilitator, and Regional Social Media Team Leader.  She has spoken on many panels.  Under her leadership One Love's regional Instagram followers increased 50 percent, achieving a reach of over 50,000.  In 2021, Vy was one of five chosen for One Love's Film Fellowship Youth Council.  Its main task was to select four filmmakers, all people of color and/or members of the LGTBQ+ community, each winning a $15,000 grant to create a feature film on relationship abuse for classroom use.

The Council's responsibility was not just to select winners, but also to advise the filmmakers how best to reach young people like themselves.  Vy said she especially enjoyed this opportunity to work with people from different cultures, locations, and life experiences all working together toward a common goal.
