Rachel Yousaf is an active voice on gender equality and women's rights. Over a year ago, she started the Instagram page "Voices for Women" to spread awareness and interact with the community. The student-led page, with over 400 followers, posts about issues such as the pay gap between men and women, unfair myths about women, and the importance of women lifting each other up. Rachel said that "by sharing posts online, I can teach others, spread fairness, and inspire respect between genders. Through Voices for Women, I use peaceful and fun education and advocacy to create a more fair and united community."
Rachel continues, “I chose to use social media because today almost everyone is on it, and it’s the best way to reach people all over the world. My work builds peace by promoting justice, equality, and understanding. Peace isn’t just about stopping violence; it’s also about making sure everyone is treated fairly.”
Rachel is also involved with the Lewis HS "Girls Need Love” club with the mission to "inspire girls and raise their feelings of self-worth." They help girls both inside and outside the school improve as individuals and focus on the issues that affect them. They also take aim at issues affecting women in general, for instance every October they sponsor a "Pink Out" event for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During her time with the club, Rachel helped organize and promote a menstrual product donation drive, sorted donated hygiene products, and assisted distributing them to women in need.
After her graduation, Rachel looks forward to college and either joining an existing non-profit organization or starting her own - one that will have a more global reach and be able to help and support women around the world, just as she has been able to help women here locally.
