Brittany Peng, Senior
McLean High School
2020-2021

Brittany Peng is the Chief Executive Officer of LeadPeace, a Fairfax County high school student organization with the mission to empower young people to become community leaders and peacebuilders by developing the skills necessary to organize peace initiatives at their own in high school and beyond. Currently, LeadPeace has a team of 30 members from the Northern Virginia region.

LeadPeace originated in the summer of 2019 as the Open Peacebuilding and Leadership (OPL) Conference. Brittany joined the OPL Conference Team as the Social Media Coordinator/Director of Outreach. She organized the December 2019 OPL Conference that brought together more than 50 Northern Virginia high school students to learn through global issue simulations, public-speaking exercises, and presentations by three guest speakers.

Following the 2019 OPL Conference, Brittany helped OPL change its name to LeadPeace and adapt its services to the virtual environment necessitated by COVID. She then served as the Chief Operating Officer before becoming the CEO in summer 2020.

Brittany currently manages two new initiatives: Lead Talks and ArtPEACE. Lead Talks holds monthly speaker events to share the stories of youth leaders, especially those who identify as people of color, female, or other minorities. Lead Talks has hosted several speakers, including Sarah Parshall Hagos, FCPS Restorative Justice Specialist; Mena Ayazi, Youth, Peace, and Security Advisor at Search for Common Ground; and Shane McCarty, Co-founder of Promote Care and Prevent Harm.

ArtPEACE hosts monthly art challenges and dialogues to foster discussions about social inequity and to promote unity. ArtPEACE recently held a dialogue on systemic vs. institutionalized racism in response to the Black Lives Matter protests. Other dialogue sessions have included Identity During a Time of Uncertainty, The Lies of the American Dream, and Ableism – discrimination and prejudice against people with disabilities.
